Police arrest suspected loanshark runner

Police have arrested a 31-year-old woman for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

The police said that they arrested the woman in Woodlands Circle at about 1.30am today.

Investigations revealed that the suspect may be a debtor-turned-runner with instructions to visit debtors' homes in Holland Road, Yishun, Meiling Street, Woodlands, Sembawang and Telok Blangah to check for signs of loanshark harassment.

The police said in a statement today that one handphone related to the case was seized from the woman.

She will be charged in court tomorrow.

The police said that first-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the business of loansharks can be fined $30,000 to $300,000, jailed for up to four years, and punished with up to six strokes of the cane.
