Singapore is undertaking a study in nuclear safety, regulation and environmental protection as part of broader efforts to strengthen its capabilities for the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) phase 1 mission in 2027.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said on Tuesday (Oct 27) that it has appointed consultancy firms to undertake study in three areas — nuclear safety, regulation and environmental protection.

It emphasised that the Government has not made a decision on the deployment of nuclear energy in Singapore, a point stressed by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on May 19, when he announced that the country will be undergoing the assessment.

"These capability-building efforts will support the Government’s effort in studying the potential deployment of nuclear energy in Singapore," NEA explained.

Setting out what the three consultancy firms — Econet Consulting, AtkinsRealis Singapore, and Environmental Resources Management — will look into, NEA said that they will examine the potential environmental implications of a nuclear power plant; international regulations and environmental standards of nuclear facilities; and, international nuclear safety standards and requirements.

NEA chief executive Geraldine Low highlighted that building strong technical and regulatory capabilities is critical in assessing the safety of nuclear energy.

"These studies will support NEA in strengthening our expertise in areas including nuclear safety, regulation and environmental protection, drawing on international experience and practices.”

Separately, the Energy Market Authority has also announced that it has appointed a panel of consultants to strengthen capability building efforts in key areas identified under the milestones approach.
