US says latest Rafah deaths won't change Israel policy, military aid
    May 29, 2024 2:12 AM

We have not seen that yet," he said, noting that Israel's operations were mostly in a corridor on the outskirts of Rafah.

Recent deaths in Rafah have tested President Joe Biden's promise to withhold weapons from Israel if the US ally made a major invasion of Rafah that put displaced persons there at risk.

Israel said that "something unfortunately went tragically wrong" in Sunday's airstrike while its military denied shelling the tent camp on Tuesday.

The State Department said on Tuesday that as soon as it saw reports of Sunday's Rafah incident, Washington expressed deep concern to Israel and urged an investigation, which Israel has promised.

Papua New Guinea bridge collapses on landslide aid route
    May 29, 2024 1:48 AM

GENEVA — A bridge has collapsed on the main route for getting aid and equipment to the site of a Papua New Guinea landslide that buried at least 2,000 people, a UN agency said on Tuesday (May 28), descibing unstable land conditions in areas of the rescue.

He said this was forcing heavy equipment being used to try to rescue people beneath the rubble to take a longer, alternative route.

"The conditions are very, very difficult.

In some parts the land is still moving," he said, adding that rain was still falling in the area of the accident.

Hong Kong arrests 6 for sedition under new security law
    May 29, 2024 1:43 AM

HONG KONG — Hong Kong national security police arrested six people across the city on Tuesday (May 28) under a new security law for alleged seditious intent, including a pro-democracy barrister already behind bars.

Britain handed Hong Kong back to China under a "one country, two systems" formula which guaranteed its freedoms, including freedom of speech, for 50 years.

The Hong Kong and Chinese governments say the national security legislation has restored stability to the city after months of sometimes violent pro-democracy street protests in 2019.

"Those intending to endanger national security should not delude themselves into thinking they can avoid police pursuit by remaining anonymous online," the statement added.

Pope issues rare apology over reported homophobic slur
    May 29, 2024 1:37 AM

"The Pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he apologises to those who felt offended by the use of a term reported by others," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in an e-mailed statement.

Italian media reported on May 27 that Pope Francis used the Italian term "frociaggine" — roughly translating as "faggotness" or "faggotry" — as he told Italian bishops he remained opposed to admitting gay people into the priesthood.

Bruni said Pope Francis was "aware" of the reports.

He reiterated that the Pope remained committed to a welcoming church for all, where "nobody is useless, nobody is superfluous, (where) there is room for everyone".

Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), and the small Taiwan People's Party together have the most seats.

The parliament reforms give lawmakers the power to ask the military, private companies or individuals to disclose information deemed relevant by parliamentarians.

"You can seize Parliament but you cannot seize public opinion," DPP parliament leader Ker Chien-ming said in an address to the chamber, adding that Beijing had influenced Taiwanese politics.
