9-year-old girl in China traumatised after lift slides down 18 floors

A nine-year-old Chinese girl had the scare of her life after the lift she was taking slid down 18 floors.

The girl from Shenzhen was returning home on May 28 evening when the incident took place.

Footage from the lift's surveillance camera showed that the girl was alone in the elevator after a boy alighted on the 19th floor.

As the lift's doors were closing, its display lights suddenly went out. With no indication whether it was going up or down, the lift started to descend from the 19th floor.

In the clip, the girl could be seen pressing all the buttons in a panic, but the machine did not register any command from the panel.

She then recalled what she learnt in a public safety museum -- to press all the lift's buttons when it starts to malfunction and fall.

Fortunately, the lift came to a halt on the ground floor and the girl managed to escape unscathed.

The girl, traumatised by the incident, cried when she reached home.

According to Chinese media reports, this is not the first time the building's residents encountered issues with the lift.

A similar incident took place a few months ago where the elevator descended from the 11th floor to the second floor without warning. At the time, the building management said that the lift was being tested.

Residents, however, weren't satisfied with the 'nonsensical' explanation and questioned the lack of a notice sign and why a test was conducted when passengers were in the lift.

After the latest incident was reported in the news, Shenzhen regulatory authority officials went to inspect the lift onsite and found that the lift's system had encountered an error.

The incident is under investigation.
