A tram derailed early on Monday (Oct 12) in the eastern district of Hong Kong Island after overhead cables were suspected to have come loose.

The incident happened on Shau Kei Wan Main East Street.

Visuals of the aftermath posted on social media show the tram car off the tracks and on the sidewalk.

One end of the car is seen lodged into the shopfront of a restaurant on the said street.

Firefighters and police officers are also present at the scene.

The derailed tram is seen lodged into the front of a restaurant along the street.

Hong Kong media outlets reported that the tram was returning to its terminal when it purportedly lost control and derailed at a bend.

The tram operator later dispatched personnel to inspect the tracks and arranged for a crane truck to remove the tram.

No injuries were reported.
