'Am I overpricing myself?' Esports shoutcaster tries to strike balance between passion and self-worth

My Gamer Life is an AsiaOne original series where gaming professionals and aspirants in Singapore share the highs, lows, successes, and failures through personal stories on how gaming has defined the course of their lives.

In the first episode of My Gamer Life, esports commentator Eugene Eu, also known as "Abstract", shares the problems he faced while pursuing his craft in Singapore and when creating a name for himself, all while helping budding talents grow in preparation for the future.

His work, also called shoutcasting, requires him to tell a story through games, focusing on making them entertaining for the audience.

The 27-year-old told AsiaOne: "Your personality is one of the most important things as it sets you apart from the others."

With 11 years of experience in the esports industry as a commentator across many game titles and events, including the recent Free Fire World Series 2022 and the Mobile Legends Professional League 2023, Eugene's journey in the industry includes defining his self-worth as a shoutcaster.

"At my current state, I am mostly dealing with the problem of identifying myself and showing my value in the regional and international scene," said Eugene as he touched on the competition he faces and difference between him and the other "good" shoutcasters.

"Am I overpricing myself? Or is it because of the different cost of living?"
