For the first time since 2019, the Capcom Cup will return, bringing together the best Street Fighter 5 players around the globe to compete. The tournament hasn’t been held since before the Covid-19 pandemic, but it’s back and bigger than before with a U$300,000 (S$394, 000) prize pool.

Capcom Fighters announced on Twitter that all matches would be played on PCs at a refresh rate of 144Hz. As the Capcom Cup is a major tournament, changing the hardware from PlayStation consoles to PCs is a significant change.

On the hardware powering these PCs, the company gives no details. However, the decision to ditch PlayStation hardware appears to be influenced by input lag, as PCs offer a significantly more steady experience with lower input lag (the time it takes for a button press to display on screen).

Low input lag is essential for professional players in the fighting game scene, where a delayed punch or kick can significantly alter the outcome of a match. The tournament will also be smoother and more accurate thanks to the improved controller response and less in-game lag on the 144Hz monitors.

Many Street Fighter 5 players have switched from PS4 and PS5 to PC as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw tournaments being held virtually. The majority of players are, as such, now accustomed to PC hardware’s reduced input lag.

One of the final major tournaments for Street Fighter 5 will require skilled players to hone their skills. That being said, the next Street Fighter 6 is expected to be faster than ever thanks to its Input Delay Reduction feature on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, so pros should also get ready for it.

The Capcom Cup will officially kick off on Feb 12, 2023.
