Chris Evans will reportedly don his Captain America suit once again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, returning to the role after his seemingly final appearance in Avengers: Endgame.

This report comes from Deadline, which has a proven track record when it comes to casting news.

Deadline’s sources are vague about whether Evans has reached a deal with Marvel Studios to return, but they do state that it’s likely he returns for at least one more Marvel movie.

The door is open for him to come back in a second film, though it probably won't be another Captain America movie.

He will likely go the way of Robert Downey Jr. instead, who appeared as Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming after the Iron Man trilogy concluded.

Marvel Studios has not commented on the news, of course, but Evans shot out a cryptic tweet, seemingly dismissing the rumours despite their credibility:

This wouldn’t be the first time actors in the MCU have denied their involvement before an official announcement.

Tatiana Maslany said that reports of her casting as She-Hulk weren’t, “a real thing,” before Disney announced that she would be She-Hulk for an upcoming Disney+ series.

Hailee Steinfeld did the same thing, before it was announced that she’d been cast as Kate Bishop in a Hawkeye series.

Evans has repeatedly stated that he had no interest in returning to the role of Captain America after Avengers: Endgame. According to Deadline however, things changed recently as, “the idea was floated,” of Rogers’ return.

The actor become more game to do it as weeks went by, and came to an agreement with Marvel Studios in the beginning of 2021.

So, how might Captain America return to the MCU? The possibilities are endless. Since Old Man Steve is still alive at the end of Avengers: Endgame after travelling back in time, he could show up in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as the head of SHIELD, which is exactly what happens in the comics.

He could also voice a smaller role in Marvel’s What If…? animated anthology series.

If he were to play a bigger role, it’s also likely that he doesn’t come back to play this universe’s Steve Rogers at all.

Seeing as both Spider-Man 3 and Doctor Strange 2 are dealing with multiverse shenanigans (and bringing back past Spider-Men), he could show up as an alternate universe’s Captain America.

In the comic arc Secret Empire, we were introduced to a version of Steve Rogers that grew up allied with Hydra, and became an evil Captain America fighting against other heroes to conquer the world.

If Evans were to return, this would be a great way to explore a fresh twist on the character without betraying the original Steve Rogers’ character arc.
