Here's how you can turn on your Mac's startup chime

Before 2016, Macs used to startup with a chime. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm referring to this sound.

Much like the THX Deep Note, that chime has become synonymous with Macs.

However, the chime was suddenly removed in 2016 when MacBooks began starting up automatically when they were opened.

Now, however, you can restore the startup chime with this simple Terminal command:

"sudo nvram StartupMute= per cent00"

However, reports say that it doesn't work on all Macs. From AppleInsider:

"AppleInsider has tested this on a few machines, and it works with most. It failed to work on a 2018 Mac mini with 10-gig Ethernet, but did work on an i7 2018 Mac mini with gigabit Ethernet. Similarly, it worked on a 2018 15-inch i9 MacBook Pro, but didn't on a 2016 i7 15-inch MacBook Pro. It worked on every late-model iMac we tried."

I found that the command works with the latest 16-inch MacBook Pro as well a 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

If you want to give it a go, here are the steps:

• Go to your Applications folder
• Open the Utilities folder
• Launch the Terminal app
• Enter sudo nvram StartupMute= per cent00 in the terminal, and hit return
• Enter password if necessary
• Restart Mac and listen out for the chime

Now, if you would excuse me, I'm going to restart my Mac a couple more times and bask in the melodious hum of the chime.
