Huawei celebrates Singapore’s 54th birthday by selling its Y6 Pro for $54

From free bubble tea giveaways to restaurant meal discounts for Huawei phone users, the beleaguered Chinese tech company sure has a way in embedding itself in the hearts and minds of Singaporeans.

The campaign to reinstate the brand to its former glory continues despite a spate of troubling headlines of late about Huawei’s little-known dealings (here and here). Knowing full well that Singaporeans just can’t resist a good deal, Huawei announced that they’ll be selling their Y6 Pro (2019) line of smartphones for a mere $54.

Get it? Because it’s Singapore’s 54th birthday this year.

But hold up a minute — what’s the catch? Quite a couple, actually. First, the deal will only last for three days (July 26 to 28) and is only available for Singaporeans and Singapore permanent residents. Not just any local too, because only folks aged 50 and up are eligible for this.

Then there’s the issue of the Huawei Y6 Pro itself. Don’t let the “pro” designation (overused in the tech world) fool you — it’s actually a low-tier smartphone that’s aimed at budget-conscious customers (read: it’s inexpensive). Still, the phone's decently packed with features at its original $198 price point. What, were you expecting a P30 Pro for dirt cheap?

Anyway, the phone performs okay for basic functions. It has a 6.9-inch display with a resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels as well as a dewdrop notch for an 8-mp front-facing camera. On the rear is a 13-mp camera; on the inside is a 3,020 mAh battery, which means a bigger charging capacity than, say, the iPhone XS. Three gigabytes of RAM inside though, so there's nothing to write home about.

Honestly, the most notable highlight of the Y60 Pro 2019 is the fact that the phone’s back panel has a textured leather finish if you pick the Amber Brown colour variant.

But a cheap deal is a cheap deal. The promotion is available at all Huawei Concept Stores and selected retailers such as Challenger (Bugis Junction, JEWEL, Jurong Point, and NEX outlets) and Courts (Megastore, Causeway Point, JEM, and Funan branches). Buyers will have to present their identity cards to verify their ages, and there’s a maximum purchase of two units per customer. Happy shopping.
