Prism+'s Spin Mini washes away your small-load laundry problems

A quick cycle on the household washer can already handle one or two lightly soiled items. The point of the Spin Mini isn't faster washing; it's about having a secondary laundry option for small or unique loads.

At 310 × 291 × 337mm, it is 31cm wide and weighs 5.1kg, small enough to sit on top of a front-loading washing machine. While it still needs permanent power, water and drainage connections, it can share a tap with the main washer and run at the same time.

Secondary washers already exist in systems such as LG's TWINWash and Hisense's multi-drum machines, but the catch is that they are larger, costlier and usually tied to the main appliance; Prism+ simply shrunk the idea into a standalone $299 box.

The loads that do not fit laundry day

As a comparison, Prism+ says the Spin Mini uses 3.5L of water versus 50.1L for a quick wash in its full-sized Typhoon WT85, demonstrating the obvious purpose of the Spin Mini: underwear and delicates that need another programme, a sweaty gym outfit that should not sit until laundry day, or the shirt and socks discovered — as always — just after the main washer starts.

Treat the Spin Mini as a 0.5kg washer when you are happy to hang the load, or a 0.2kg washer-dryer when you want the entire job finished. The smaller drying capacity is normal for washer-dryers because clothes need room for warm air and movement.

Prism+ says the 0.5kg capacity translates to roughly four to five pairs of underwear. That or six pairs of socks, or one baby romper, or four to five bibs, or one small pet harness, depending on fabric and weight. 

A full recommended drying load typically takes 2.5 to three hours, so the Spin Mini offers overnight convenience rather than rapid turnaround.

For parents, this would be handy for baby clothing that requires a different detergent, or for situations where stained bibs and onesies need to be dealt with quickly. 

Pet owners with small pet clothes and washable accessories who would rather keep fur, outdoor dirt, and pet odours out of the main drum may find this appealing too.

Automatic features — what it takes off your hands

The Spin Mini features automatic dosing and dispenses 1ml of detergent per wash. This removes one of the fiddlier parts of running such a tiny load. The machine also offers quick wash, hot-water wash, dry-only and combined wash-and-dry programmes.

It also has a deodorise cycle that circulates air at up to 50 deg C with gentle drum movement, so you can refresh lightly worn gymwear, caps, or pet accessories without putting them through a full wash.

Price and installation

The Prism+ Spin Mini Wash & Dry comes in white and space grey with a one-year on-site warranty. Although carrying an RRP of $399, it is currently listed at $299. Its four-tick water-efficiency rating also makes it eligible for Climate Vouchers.

Basic installation covers the nearest power, water and drainage connections, including a shared two-way water connection where suitable. Additional plumbing, adaptors or longer hoses may cost more.
