Roomba vacuum cleaners are generally thought of as charming little things — disc-shaped motorised robots that hum happily while sucking up dirt around the house.

If only we could make them more human. If only… they could swear like a sailor whose only mode of communication is by cursing really loudly.

YouTuber and software developer Michael Reeves recently modded his Roomba to do nothing but horribly yell out expletives when it hits things. The technical mischief was carried out in response to the repeated requests from his YouTube subscribers (clocking in at over 1.7 million as of writing) — and for the lulz, of course.

How Reeves jigged the device is by removing the parts of the Roomba that does the cleaning before installing a Bluetooth speaker that plays the audio from a Raspberry Pi, triggered when a collision is detected.

The result? Audible agony emanating from the wee robot, which also gets miserably existential. “AUGH, WHY WAS I CREATED THIS WAY?!” the robot yells out at one point.

Reeves isn’t a stranger to building hilarious contraptions, including a robot that picks tomatoes out of salads and a device that electrocutes your muscles into doing a dab
