Singapore diplomat executes spot-on civil servant outfit at World Cosplay Summit 2019

The World Cosplay Summit (WCS), as the name implies, is a pretty huge event in the realm of Japanese pop-culture fandom. This year’s outing is the 17th edition of the international cosplay event, with a whopping total of 40 countries sending representatives to the championships in Nagoya and Tokyo.

Being a land full of otakus (don’t worry, we’re down with the geekdom too), Singapore's representatives have been pretty decent contenders since 2006. The prominent likes of Kai’s Crafts and Cosplays as well as Rithe are flying the Singapore flag high this year — but it was another local individual who stole the limelight at the WCS opening ceremony last Friday.

“Nani?” we hear you exclaim. Yes, it was none other than the First Secretary of the Embassy of Singapore in Japan, Michael Chew, whose ensemble was a spitting image of a civil servant.

Tongue in cheek on the embassy’s side, of course. Posing alongside Rithe as the titular character in manga/anime Violet Evergarden and Kai as Gold Experience stand user Giorno Giovanna from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Chew stood out for going full method. His civil servant cosplay was so scarily on point that it’s actually believable that he is one. Certainly fooled us.
