Sony’s new Alpha 7RV is turning many heads, mainly because of its high-resolution 61MP Exmor R CMOS image sensor and a new AI processing unit dedicated to image recognition.

It also gets the latest BIONZ processor (the XR), granting it massive headroom in processing power and pipeline speed–with that many megapixels, you certainly need the speed. And the Alpha 7RV (A7RV) can deliver ISO 100 to ISO 32000 for both stills and movies with 15 stops for stills.

The A7RV also has a high-precision image stabilisation unit, advanced gyro sensors and optimised image stabilisation algorithms (stills and video).

The camera has an 8-step compensation effect for stills, while the new stabilisation algorithm offers precise detection and control to a single-pixel level. The upgraded Pixel Shift Multi Shooting takes advantage of this precision and with Imaging Edge Desktop (v3.5) you can generate a 16-image composite with approximately 240.8 million pixels (19,008 x 12,672 pixels).

Aggressive AF

The camera features Real-time Recognition AF, which uses a new AI processing unit with deep learning for improved accuracy and broader subject recognition. Not only can it estimate poses, but it can also recognise insects on top of animals and vehicles now.

On top of the more tenacious and speedy tracking, it does continuous shooting at up to 10 fps with AF/AE tracking, silent, vibration-free shooting at up to 7 fps, and continuously shoots up to 583 compressed RAW.

Other features include full-time DMF (direct manual focus) and focus bracketing, which allows for focus-stacked images.

Capable video camera

The A7RV can shoot up to 8K 24/25p video and 4K video oversampled from 6.2K without binning. It supports the high-efficiency MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec, intra-recording, and 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, among others. It can also use subject recognition in real-time tracking; has breathing compensation and the ability to use camera metadata for post-processing.

Other features

  • New 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor (conventional tilting monitor + side-opening vari-angle
  • 9.44 million dots electronic viewfinder
  • Flicker suppression (100Hz and 120Hz)
  • 2x CFexpress Type A/SDXC compatible media slots
