Square Enix’s full-fledged Avengers video game to be revealed in E3 2019

Square Enix’s full-fledged Avengers video game to be revealed in E3 2019

Avengers, reassemble. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and friends are set to reunite in a proper video game made by the people behind Final Fantasy, the Tomb Raider reboots, and the Deus Ex games. None of the mobile gaming cash grabs that keep popping up on your Facebook news feed, don’t worry.

Set apart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (so you don’t have to worry about any continuity issues), Marvel’s Avengers is set to be fully revealed at Square Enix’s eagerly-awaited E3 conference next month, where they could also shed more light on their Final Fantasy 7 remake.

It’s been a good three years since its announcement trailer was released, depicting battered, beat-up versions of iconic Avengers weaponry, including Cap’s shield, Tony Stark’s flickering Iron Man gauntlet, and Thor’s hammer Mjolnir laid in ruins. “We just need to reassemble,” says a voice offscreen, presumably Black Widow’s.

If this sounds like exciting news, it definitely is. Square Enix and Marvel signed a “multi-year, multi-game” partnership that will see a completely original story and a universe that “gamers can play in the years to come”.

"The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise,” wrote Square Enix in a press release.

Nothing much else is known about the story, gameplay or possible release date, so we’ll just have to wait until E3 to know more during Square Enix’s live event at 9am (Singapore Time) on June 11. Knowing Square Enix’s track record, it’s probably safe to assume that it’ll be an action role-playing game (RPG) of some sort — just one that features dozens of characters and locations from Marvel Comics’ bottomless treasure trove.
