Carole Baskin was sent death threats after Tiger King was aired.

The star of the Netflix series has revealed she was called constantly for three months with "people screaming obscenities at me" after the show premiered.

She said: "My husband and I binge watched it just like everybody else did, because the teasers for it didn't sound like anything we thought we were working on. We thought we were working on the Blackfish for big cats and the teasers looked like some kind of freak show.

“So we sat through the entire thing and thought, 'At some point they'll get to the important stuff,' and they just never did. We just looked at each other gobsmacked and said, 'That was a missed opportunity.' And then my phone started ringing and it rang every two minutes for three months with people screaming obscenities at me, saying they want to kill me.

“They wanted to kill my family, they wanted to kill the cats, they wanted to burn the place to the ground. I was asking them, 'Why do you want to kill the cats?' And they said, 'Because they don't belong in cages,' and we'd tell them, 'That's our entire mission - that we save them in the wild.'"

The 59-year-old animal activist confessed she has hired bodyguards for the last 20 years because of her work in trying to end the captivity of big cats.

Speaking on ITV's This Morning, she added: "Actually, my life has been threatened for the past 20 years since we have been working on the bills to end the captivity of big cats and what you guys saw in Tiger King was just one person and a couple of threats... Over the past 20 years, I've had to hire bodyguards to go with me when I'd speak in public... I've been physically attacked by people."
