Kim Jae Hwan professes love for Singapore's kaya toast, confesses to eating '50 pieces' before performance

South Korean singer-songwriter Kim Jae Hwan, 23, took the stage last night (July 6) in the Singapore stop of his Asian fan meeting tour, MIN:D.

The former Wanna One member performed self-composed songs from his debut album Another, and greeted fans, who are collectively known as WIN:D.

Going into the fan meeting, I expected the usual finger hearts and platitudes that singers often spout. You know the drill. Every fan meeting I've been to has contained some iteration of the following: I am nothing without my fans, thank you so much for your support… wash, rinse and repeat.

It ended up being so much more than that - I was blown away by Jae Hwan's vocals (those high notes!), guitar skills and charismatic dance moves. He was also spontaneously funny throughout the night and had his fans in stitches.

Perhaps one of the most amusing moments of the night was the five minutes he dedicated to showing his love for kaya toast. Unlike most foreign celebrities who often wax lyrical about chilli crab, Kim Jae Hwan really has a thing for our old school breakfast favourite.

"I ate about 50 pieces of kaya toast before my performance," Jae Hwan announced to fans during the Q&A segment.

"That's why the battery exploded," he continued, joking about the battery pack that had come loose during his performance earlier.

He went on to act out a mock commercial for kaya toast with some very convincing soundbites: "Wow what sound? Wow. Sweet. So sweet. This kaya jam."

Watch him in action from 1:33 onwards. Someone get him a kaya jam commercial deal.

Some of our other favourite moments of the night:

1. "MBS? I ONLY KNOW MBC."

Jae Hwan had this hilarious response when he was asked if he had been to Marina Bay Sands. Seems like he's only familiar with MBC, a Korean broadcasting company.

2."I'M GOING TO BE SEXY FROM NOW ON."

We just might see a more sultry style from Jae Hwan for his next album. He declared that he would be taking the sexy route after fans voted with their cheers.

3. JAE HWAN'S SEXY RENDITION OF HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Staying true to his resolution to be more sexy, Jae Hwan attempted a seductive version of Happy Birthday dedicated to all WIN:Ds who had their birthday in the month of July.

4. ATTACK OF THE SILVER GUITAR

Bringing his silver guitar out for a cover of Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Jae Hwan realised that it was reflecting the stage lights onto the audience. Having fun with it, he moved his guitar around, sending the beam of light to fans around the venue. The fans, of course, loved it. At least, those who didn't have a spotlight shining in their eyes.

5. TEACHING FANS SOME KOREAN SLANG

On the topic of food, Jae Hwan was asked if he could cook. He took the opportunity to school us on some Korean slang.

"There is an expression called yoseknam. It means sexy guy who can cook [yori seksihan namja]… That's not me. I only eat," he quipped.

WIN:Ds, now you know. Perhaps Jae Hwan will be receiving some handmade kaya toast the next time he's in Singapore.
