Why Hong Kong legend Kara Wai appeared in public with stocking over head

It's not everyday you run into a celebrity.

It's certainly not common to run into a screen legend wearing a stocking over her head.

Alas, this absurd scene transpired yesterday (May 21) at a train station in Hong Kong.

The public was left stunned when veteran actress Kara Wai did just that, before proceeding to buy bread at a shop, with the staff almost thinking it's a robbery attempt.

It turned out this was a bet the 59-year-old had made with fans.

She had promised to pull the stunt if the finale of her TVB series The Defected broke 33 ratings points in viewership.

It did and Kara live-streamed herself fulfilling the promise yesterday.

During the stream, she said that she was "very excited" and was having an "adrenaline rush".

Police drama The Defected is the network's blockbuster production of the year.

Kara portrays the antagonist Man Hei Wah, alongside Benjamin Yuen and Philip Keung.

It is also the first TVB serial to be available on Netflix.
