Snacc Attacc: We try the salted egg fish skin challenge and the results are shocking!

Snacc Attacc is a bi-weekly video series where we try out different snacks and let you know if it's worth "snacc-(a)ttacking".

This week, we wade into the war of the salted egg fish skins and challenged ourselves to match the taste to the brand name.

In the battle of salted egg yolk fish skin snacks, who will emerge victorious?

Salted egg snacks have exploded onto the market in recent years, kick-started by the short-lived food trend that was the salted egg yolk croissant back in 2016.

While the hype over the salty-sweet croissants has died down, the demand for salted egg yolk anything has persevered.

And now, the flavour has become a Singapore signature of sorts, making its mark on everything from ice cream and cheese tarts, to potato chips, and of course, fried fish skins.

Irvins, with its cult-like following, sees queues before their stalls open, and is known to sell out within the hour.

More brands, such as established bak kwa makers Bee Cheng Hiang and Fragrance, have also jumped on the salted egg fish skin bandwagon.

There's just something about the umami-filled, rich-tasting snack that leaves us hankering for more.

And if you're not crazy about fried fish skins, there's now a soy skin option for lacto-ovo vegetarians looking for meat-free alternatives.

Crusty's Salted Egg Soy Skin Crisps tastes just like the vegetarian crispy zai er (mock goosemeat) we're familiar with, coated with a tasty salted egg yolk seasoning.

We did a blind taste-test of snacks from four different brands to see if we can identify which is our favourite. They are:

1. Irvins Salted Egg Fish Skin, $8
2. Fragrance Salted Egg Fish Skin, $6.80
3. Bee Cheng Hiang Salted Egg Butter Fish Skin, $9.50
4. Crusty's Salted Egg Soy Skin Crisps, $7.50

Who has the best tastebuds among us to emerge as the ultimate salted egg yolk fish skin champion?

And will fans of the hugely popular Irvins fail to identify their favourite? Watch to find out!
