Nearly 30-metre tree crashes onto car in Penang; 3, including 9-year-old girl, escape with minor injuries, Malaysia News

Three people, including a nine-year-old girl, were injured after a nearly 30-metre Angsana tree fell onto their car in Penang.

The incident occurred on Sunday (Aug 9) at around 9am when an elderly couple and their granddaughter were travelling on the four-lane road towards Komtar, reported The Star.

The victims were identified as Loh Kok Kim, 66, his wife Lee Geok Suan, 68, and their nine-year-old granddaughter, Emily Loh Tze Ying.

Lee sustained injuries to her nose and left hand, while her husband suffered chest injuries. Their granddaughter suffered a hand injury.

All three were subsequently taken to hospital.

In a statement, Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of the Operations and Firefighting Division John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call at 9.12am, according to The Sun.

He added that a team of eight firefighters from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the scene.

"Members of the public who were in the area successfully removed the three victims from the vehicle before firefighters arrived," said John.

Fallen tree estimated to be 90 years old

Penang Island City Council mayor A. Rajendran said the tree, identified as an Angsana, was nearly 30 metres tall and had a trunk diameter of around two metres, reported The Sun.

It was estimated to be about 90 years old.

Rajendran said an assessment found that about 30 per cent of the tree's roots had deteriorated, while about 40 per cent of the base of its trunk was hollow.
