A pair of sisters were trapped and subsequently died after a fire broke out in their two-storey terrace house in Johor Bahru on Monday (June 1).

The Johor Fire and Rescue Department said they received a call at 9.06pm about the fire at Jalan Ehsan Jaya 3/10 in Taman Ehsan Jaya, Johor Bahru.

Rescuers from several stations arrived at 9.12pm and found the blaze had destroyed 60 per cent of the house, the department said in a statement the same day.

The two victims, identified in local media as Huang Yuning (transliteration), 13, and Huang Yujie (transliteration), 15, were found unconscious in a room on the top floor.

Paramedics performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation on the girls before taking them to Sultan Ismail Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The fire was contained at 10.05pm and firefighting operations ended at 11.10pm.

A total of 30 personnel were involved in the operation, the fire department said.

Investigations into the cause of the blaze are ongoing.

Fire believed to have started on ground floor

The victims' parents, who are unemployed, were reportedly not home and returned after being informed of the fire, local media reported.

The deceased's brother, 23-year-old Huang Haojun (transliteration), told China Press that he was studying in Kuala Lumpur when the incident occurred and received the news on his way back home.

The two victims were found near each other, one in bed and the other in the bathroom, a female relative told the news outlet.

She said the fire is believed to have started on the first floor living room and while the upper floor was not affected, thick smoke had billowed from below.
