Two people died while two others were rescued after a fire broke out in a three-storey shophouse in Klang on Wednesday (Aug 12).

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ashrul Riezal Ashbar told local media that they received a call about the incident at 5.50pm.

The fire happened on the second floor, and about 90 per cent of the area was damaged.

The dead, identified as a 66-year-old man and his eight-year-old nephew, were found in separate toilets on the second floor after firefighters extinguished the blaze, reported The Star.

They were believed to have been trapped in the toilets, while the other two victims who suffered breathing difficulties were rescued by members of the public and taken to hospital.

"Based on information from the family, there were four victims in the building, with two of them successfully rescued by members of the public," said Ashrul.

A Threads video of the incident shared by user notatanparupa on Thursday shows a man climbing onto the second floor of the building.

He stops outside one of the windows, where smoke is seen billowing out, and starts hitting it with an object.

Another three men also climb up to the same window to join in the rescue effort, and they successfully lift two children out of the smouldering unit

One passer-by is seen climbing up the ladder and carrying the two kids down the ladder on his back.

The video, which garnered over 145,600 views and about 4,400 likes as at Thursday night, ends with three of the four men removing their shirts and tying them into makeshift masks as they appear to enter the smoke-filled unit.

Investigations are ongoing into the cause of fire and the deaths.
