Fuel prices in Malaysia rise for first time in 2 weeks as world crude oil prices climb

The finance ministry announced the adjusted petrol and diesel prices on Wednesday night.
For the period of Aug 20 to 26, retail prices for unsubsidised Ron95 and Ron97 petrol have risen by 15 sen and 10 sen respectively, while the posted price for unsubsidised diesel rose by 20 sen.
Following the latest round of pricing, the new prices for unsubsidised Ron95, Ron97, and diesel are RM3.77 (S$1.18), RM4.25 and RM4.67 per litre respectively.
Malaysia uses the automatic pricing mechanism (APM) formula — introduced in 1983 to stabilise prices based on market fluctuations — when determining weekly petrol prices.

Explaining its decision, the ministry pointed out that the hikes are in line with the increase in global crude oil prices.
"Prolonged global geopolitical instability continues to increase risks to world crude oil prices and supplies," it said, noting that the US-Iran conflict has since entered the 173th day on Aug 20.
Then, there is also the intensifying conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has seen Ukraine attacking oil refineries in Russia. The latter is the world's third largest oil producer.
As long as traffic flows through the Strait of Hormuz do not return to normal, petroleum product prices are expected to fluctuate significantly, the ministry cautioned.
It also reiterated its appeal for motorists to remain prudent in their fuel consumption and to continue reducing unnecessary travel.
