The remains of the late Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, wife of former Malaysia prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, were taken home by her family on Monday (Sept 28) morning.

Chef Badrol Mohd Noor, widely known for his traditional Malay cuisine and experience cooking for Malaysian leaders, posted a video showing the couple's third son, Mukhriz Mahathir, accompanying his mother's remains as it was taken from the National Heart Institute at about 10.50am.

Dr Mahathir is seen seated in a black multi-purpose vehicle that followed behind the hearse.

The remains arrived at Mahathir's residence at The Mines, Seri Kembangan in Selangor at about 11.15am.

Funeral prayers for Dr Siti Hasmah will be held at As-Syarif mosque in Kuala Lumpur, before burial at the Muslim cemetery in Putrajaya.

Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had earlier announced that Dr Siti Hasmah will be accorded a state funeral, and had instructed the Government's chief secretary and Armed Forces commander to provide the necessary assistance.

Dr Siti Hasmah, who turned 100 on July 12, died at the National Heart Institute at about 9.20am on Monday.

She studied medicine at King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore and graduated in 1955, and later joined the Malaysian Health Ministry and worked as a medical officer, focusing on public health, maternal and child healthcare.

Dr Mahathir married her in 1956.

They have seven children, including former Kedah chief minister Mukhriz Mahathir.
