A woman has been arrested after allegedly shoving an elderly woman into a drain in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 18.

According to Malaysian media, the suspect has been identified as a woman who contested as an independent candidate in Malaysia's last general election.

The victim has been identified as a 79-year-old former Selangor hockey player, according to Brickfields police chief Hoo Chang Hook, reported the New Straits Times, adding that the incident occurred at around 10.30am.

Footage of the incident circulating online shows the suspect waiting outside a store and subsequently shoving the victim into a drain.

"The victim's friend lodged a police report and the suspect was arrested on the same day," Free Malaysia Times quoted Hoo as saying.

During initial questioning, the suspect denied pushing the victim and failed to give a reasonable explanation for her actions, police said.

"She also did not know the victim personally," he said.

The victim sustained injuries to her back, her left arm and the back of her head.

The suspect was remanded for a day, and the magistrate ordered that she be taken for psychiatric examination to assist with investigations.
