Archaic 'feminine virtue' class cancelled in China

Wenzhou in East China's Zhejiang province has called off a local training course dedicated to so-called "feminine virtues" after online videos about the class aroused condemnation over pushing outdated ideals on underage girls.

The videos, posted on online social media platforms, show attendees, reportedly girls aged 5 to 18 and their parents, from Wenzhou taking classes on "feminine virtue" during a summer camp in August, advocating antiquated ideas including "women are inferior to men in social status", "domestic violence should be allowed" and "divorce is a nightmare for women".

Upon investigation it was revealed the summer camp was conducted by the Wenzhou traditional promotion association, a non-governmental organisation, between August 10 and 24, with some teachers coming from Fushun in Northeast China's Liaoning province.
