Two women were arrested in Hong Kong on Wednesday (Aug 26) after a viral video footage showed a young girl being allegedly slapped in the face, Hong Kong public broadcaster RTHK reported on the same day.

An argument allegedly broke out over the use of play facilities at a Kwun Tong shopping mall after two 34-year-old mothers took their children there at around 4pm.

During the dispute, an elderly woman, 68, who is the mother of one of the women, allegedly slapped the five-year-old girl, according to RTHK.

In the video, the girl can be seen falling to the ground after being hit.

Separately, Hong Kong broadcaster TVB News reported that the elderly woman was at the mall with her daughter and grandson.

The grandson allegedly got into an argument with the five-year-old girl, prompting the elderly woman to allegedly attack her.

The girl's mother is also suspected of assaulting the other 34-year-old woman.

The girl, the elderly woman and her 34-year-old daughter were taken to hospital.

Police arrested the elderly woman and the girl's 34-year-old mother on suspicion of assault and assault causing bodily harm, according to TVB News.

The cause of the dispute remains unclear, Hong Kong publication The Standard reported.

Investigations are ongoing, police said.
