With over 30 million PlayStation 5 sold, Sony says global shortage is over

If you have been seeking a PlayStation 5 console of your own over the past few years, you are not alone in finding it hard.

Market forces and events have made it almost impossible to reliably produce the consoles, but at CES 2023, there was some good news.

Sony announced that over 30 million units of the PlayStation 5 have been sold, and that the console shortage should be.

"We truly appreciate the support and patience of the PlayStation community as we managed unprecedented demand amid global challenges over the past two years," Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan said.

"PS5 supply improved toward the end of last year, and I'm happy to share that December was the biggest month ever for PS5 console sales and that we have now sold more than 30 million units through to consumers worldwide."

This means that from November until now, five more million units have made their way to consumers, which is a significant number.

Such stats have also made it clear to Ryan that the supply issues are now solved, and that "everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at a retailer globally, starting from this point forward."

The main issue that was affecting production was the semiconductor chip shortage that has plagued the tech world, but even then, the PlayStation 5 has been flying off the shelves like hotcakes whenever and wherever it can be found.

Naturally, Sony has every incentive to ensure that consumers are always going to be able to find one, and things have gradually improved. and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

For those that have yet to experience the magic and cutting-edge technology of the PlayStation 5, 2023 does look like a good year to begin that journey.

Hopefully, anyone who wants one will be able to get them at proper prices instead of paying the scalpers.
