Sengkang-Punggol LRT boosts capacity with 8 new two-car trains

Announcing this on Friday (Oct 2), ahead of the resumption of full train services on the Sengkang West inner loop on Sunday, the authority said the procurement will allow it to support growing travel demand in Sengkang and Punggol.
Third-generation LRVs were progressively introduced into service from the third quarter of 2025 onwards.
Each two-car train can carry about 200 passengers.
They are equipped with passenger-friendly features such as ergonomic seating, brighter and more energy-efficient LED lighting, clearer passenger information displays, more visible door-closing indicator light strips and an improved air-conditioning system for greater passenger comfort.

In the event of emergencies, the new LRVs also have inter-car doors to facilitate safer and quicker passenger evacuation.
The new LRVs also include enhancements, such as an onboard touch-screen diagnostic panel for quicker fault detection during maintenance and more ergonomic access to onboard equipment for staff.
These are intended to better support operations and maintenance, according to LTA.
By the end of 2028, a total of 25 third-generation trains will fully replace the existing first-generation fleet, which comprises 25 one-car and eight two-car LRVs.
The additional procurement will bring the total number of third-generation trains to 33.
They will operate alongside eight second-generation two-car LRVs, bringing the train fleet to 41 by 2030.
