In the last six months of 2025, more than 650 cyclists were issued summonses by the police for violating traffic laws.

The laws flouted by cyclists include not obeying traffic signals and not wearing helmets when cycling on the road, the police told AsiaOne in reply to queries.

The police added that cyclists must travel in the same direction as the flow of traffic, ride as close as practicable to the far left edge of the road, and allow traffic to safely overtake them.

Cyclists must also switch on their front white and rear red lights in the dark, as well as keep to a maximum length of five bicycles when riding in groups.

When available, cyclists should always use bicycle lanes and not any other part of the road, said the police.

Additionally, they must refrain from using mobile devices when riding and not cycle on expressways, road tunnels and selected viaducts.

Of their enforcement action, the police said this demonstrates their continued commitment to road safety and ensuring that all roads users, including cyclists, comply with road safety rules.

In 2024, a total of 9,302 people were injured in road traffic accidents and of those injured, 591 – or 6.3 per cent – were cyclists and pillion passengers, according to statistics from Data.gov.sg.
