Firefighter, 2 others taken to hospital after fire at Ang Mo Kio HDB flat

A firefighter and two people were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out at a HDB unit in Ang Mo Kio.

The incident occurred at Blk 254 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 on Tuesday (Sept 22) at around 10.45am, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

Footage circulating online showed shattered windows of the affected unit while bright orange flames engulfed the unit. Thick black smoke also billowed out from the windows.

The fire involved items in the living room of the affected unit, which was located on the seventh floor.

SCDF managed to extinguish the fire with a water jet during operations and found two people in the bedrooms.

The two people were assessed for smoke inhalation after being rescued from the unit and were subsequently taken to Singapore General Hospital.

Additionally, one firefighter was assessed for heat exhaustion after the firefighting operation and was taken to Woodlands Hospital as a precaution.

About 20 residents from the block were also evacuated by the police and SCDF.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, said the SCDF.

In a Facebook post on the same day, Kebun Baru MP Henry Kwek said that he visited the affected block to check on residents.

"HDB will also arrange temporary accommodation for the affected resident," he said, thanking the authorities, HDB and Ang Mo Kio Town Council members who were on the ground working to support affected residents.

Kwek also urged residents to remind their family members about fire safety precautions and to be mindful when cooking or using other sources of heat at home.
