Car burns down under rain in Tampines

Moderate to heavy thundery showers swept across most parts of Singapore on Tuesday (Sept 22) afternoon, but a car was engulfed by flames in Tampines.

The incident happened at about 5.45pm near the junction of Tampines Road and Tampines Avenue 10.

Videos and photographs of the incident seen by AsiaOne show the fire is seen only at the engine compartment of the vehicle early on.

Flames later engulf it completely, as thick black smoke billows from it.

In response to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said its firefighters extinguished the fire using a waterjet and a hose reel, adding there were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

There were 193 cases of fires involving vehicles in 2025, according to SCDF's annual fire statistics.

Despite a 12.3 per cent drop in number of cases, car fires continued to form the largest category of fires in non-building premises.

The primary cause of vehicle fires in Singapore is due to ignition sources, such as overheating and electrical faults within the engine compartment.

Vehicle owners are advised to service their vehicles regularly at the manufacturer's recommended interval.
