Don Don Donki apologises after customer finds cockroach in sushi bought from Orchard Central outlet

Sharing the incident on social media on Thursday (Aug 6), the customer said she felt nauseous after noticing it.
A photo accompanying the post also shows what appears to be a baby cockroach in the sushi.
In a screenshot of a response from Don Don Donki shared by the customer, the chain apologised for the incident and offered the customer a full refund for the meal and a $50 voucher, which could be collected from its Orchard Central outlet by contacting the duty manager.
Responding to queries from AsiaOne, a spokesperson for Don Don Donki said it is aware of the report and have contacted the customer to address the concerns directly.
"Upon receiving the report, we immediately commenced an investigation and are conducting a thorough inspection of the outlet," said the spokesperson.
"We are also reviewing our pest-control measures and working closely with our relevant partners to identify and address any possible gaps."
The chain also reiterated its commitment to maintaining high food safety and hygiene standards.
Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it is aware of the incident and is looking into the matter.
The agency added that as part of its enquiry and evidence-gathering process, it may engage the person who provided the feedback for more details, and would not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence was obtained.
"Food safety is a joint responsibility. While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices," said the agency.
"Food operators should also ensure their premises are clean and well-maintained."
Members of the public who have concerns about food safety practices by food operators should report them via the agency's online feedback form, it said.
