MP David Hoe thanks Yellow Ribbon beneficiary for subduing man who stabbed himself in Clementi

A former inmate has been revealed as the man who subdued the 34-year-old man who stabbed himself at Clementi on Monday (Aug 10).

The incident occurred at Block 441B Clementi Avenue 3 around 12.20pm, when a man grabbed a knife from a durian seller, began shouting and stabbing himself.

Based on an eyewitness account, a passer-by rushed forward to subdue the man, and the two were locked in a stalemate for more than 20 minutes until the police and paramedics arrived.

In an Instagram post on Monday night, Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC MP David Hoe said he visited Osman Sidin, 56, the man who fearlessly stepped forward during the incident.

Osman told Hoe that he was worried for the man and the people around him, especially the young children, which spurred him to take action in the moment.

"At about 10pm tonight, after my events for the day, I visited Mr Osman to check on him. Thankfully, he is well," wrote Hoe, adding that Osman is part of the Yellow Ribbon community.

Hoe said: "Second chances matter. Because people can change for the better, and when given that chance, they can go on to care for and make a difference in the lives of others."

During the visit, Hoe presented Osman with a yellow star plush toy, in recognition of his heroic act.

"That is the Singapore I hope we continue to build: one where we look out for one another, and where everyone has the opportunity to contribute," wrote Hoe.
