Fire size of football field engulfs warehouse

A huge fire broke out at a warehouse on Fan Yoong Road, off Jalan Boon Lay, in the early hours on 3 October 2014.

The blaze was so big that it levelled most of the warehouse and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had to activate some 60 personnel to fight the fire.

Five fire engines, three Red Rhinos, nine support vehicles, an ambulance and an unmanned firefighting machine were sent to the scene.

The SCDF was alerted to the fire just before 3am and the firefighters arrived within eight minutes. An SCDF spokesman said they found an inferno which was about the size of a football field.

QUELLED

The fire was brought under control within an hour and was extinguished by 7am. However, damping-down operations were carried out throughout the day and ended only in the evening.

When The New Paper arrived at the scene at 11.35am, the warehouse was almost completely charred and levelled, save for a small area near its main entrance.

Smoke could still be seen rising from the rubble and some roads in the area were cordoned off.

The warehouse belonged to Liong Hup Soon Trading which deals in plastic materials.

Four workers managed to escape before the arrival of firefighters.

No one was injured in the blaze and investigations are under way.

Liong Hup Soon Trading could not be reached for comment.
