Hotel drug bust, sale of unregistered health products: 14 people under police investigation for illegal activities in Geylang

Fourteen people aged between 27 and 67 are under police investigation for their alleged involvement in illegal activities in Geylang.

The police said in a statement on Thursday (April 2) that the 10 men and four women were arrested during a series of enforcement operations conducted from March 1 to 7 to clamp down on the likes of illegal gambling, the sale of unregistered health products and drug-related activities.

Led by Bedok Police Division, the agencies involved are: Criminal Investigation Department, Central Narcotics Bureau, Health Sciences Authority, Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, Singapore Customs, Land Transport Authority and Singapore Food Agency.

On March 1, four men aged between 33 and 61 were arrested for alleged illegal online gambling activities. Cash amounting to $1,700 and various gambling-related items were seized.

Between March 2 and 5, the authorities seized $5,000 worth of cough syrup and sexual enhancement products. 

A 27-year-old man is under investigation for his alleged involvement in the illegal sales of unregistered health products and possession of etomidate-laced vapes. Separately, a 48-year-old man was arrested for having 560 sticks of duty-unpaid cigarettes.

And between March 2 and 7, a 39-year-old woman was arrested for alleged vice-related activities, while a 45-year-old man was nabbed for being a member of an unlawful society.

On March 4, officers from Singapore Customs seized a total of 886 sticks of contraband cigarettes. Twelve men and three women aged between 21 and 43 were issued composition fines.

On the same day, a 40-year-old woman was arrested for suspected vice-related activities after police conducted checks on a massage parlour in Geylang. The outlet is also assisting with investigations for infringing regulations.

On March 6, three men and a woman, aged between 20 and 42, were caught during an LTA-led operation against illegally modified personal mobility devices and power-assisted bicycles (PAB).

An e-scooter and three PABs were impounded.

On March 7, a 39-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman were arrested for drug-related offences during a raid across five hotels in Geylang. A 67-year-old man was also nabbed for disobedience to a lawful order from a public servant. 

Meanwhile, a 32-year-old man and 31-year-old were caught with three vapes and are assisting in investigations.

Superintendent Letts Tan, commanding officer of Geylang Neighbourhood Police Centre, said that illegal activities will not be tolerated and "firm actions" will be taken against those who "blatantly disregard the law".
