The salaries of Singapore's President and the Speaker of Parliament, as well as the allowances for Deputy Speakers, will be increased after Parliament unanimously approved three motions on Tuesday (Oct 6).

Leader of the House Indranee Rajah introduced the motions, which seek to align the salaries with the new political salary framework accepted by the Government in September.

Under the first motion, the President's annual salary will rise from $1,568,900 to $2,568,200.

The change involves amendments to the Civil List, which sets out the expenditure for the President's Office.

Tuesday's motions were also approved unanimously by the House.

Speaker's salary to rise to $900,000

The Speaker of Parliament's salary will also increase under the new framework.

The Speaker's part-time annual salary is fixed at 50 per cent of the increased MR4 ministerial reference salary.

This means the Speaker's annual pay will rise from $550,000 to $900,000, including a bonus and variable component.

The third motion provides for each Deputy Speaker to receive an allowance equivalent to 15 per cent of the Speaker's annual part-time salary.

Based on the revised salary and assuming a variable component of one month's salary, this works out to $135,000 a year.

The three motions follow recommendations and guidelines discussed during a parliamentary debate on political salaries in September.

Similar motions were brought to Parliament following the previous review of ministerial salaries in 2012. Those motions were passed without debate.
