Punggol residents offered free noise blankets, earbuds amid Cross Island Line construction

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is offering to install noise blankets for Punggol residents affected by noise pollution caused by Cross Island Line construction work.

In a Facebook post on Monday (Aug 10), Punggol GRC MP Sun Xueling said that she is aware of the significant noise pollution faced by residents at Waterway Terraces 1.

In particular, the noise is caused by the construction of a diaphragm wall for the Cross Island Line next to Blk 308A Punggol Walk.

Construction of the diaphragm wall is especially important, as it holds back soil while preventing nearby roads and buildings from collapsing, she said, adding that construction is expected to continue till the end of the year.

To alleviate noise pollution, LTA is offering affected residents noise blankets, which can be installed directly in their units.

The blankets measure 2m by 1m, and can reduce noise by 15 to 17 decibels, said Sun, who is also Senior Minister of State for National Development and Transport.

LTA will handle the Installation of the noise blankets, and she also assured residents that no drilling is required.

At the same time, she said that noise blankets are "quite thick", and will block out light and wind while providing soundproofing.

Residents who would prefer not to install noise blankets can also pick up free noise cancelling earbuds from the Waterway Residents Network, said Sun.

She said: "Let me know if you have any feedback, and we'll do our very best to expedite the completion of the Cross Island Line."
