'You shut down Zouk': Man in his 50s collapses from heart attack at Zouk, saved by stranger's CPR

A man who suffered a heart attack at Zouk on Saturday (Sept 19) was saved with the help of a good Samaritan who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him after he collapsed.

The man had been out with friends at CHIJMES on Friday night before heading to Zouk in the early hours of Saturday.

One of his friends posted about the incident on Instagram account 90s_clubber_singapore on Tuesday.

At the night club, the man's friends said he was dancing to the music before he suddenly froze and fell backwards at about 3am.

A good Samaritan came to his rescue and performed CPR before he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

The friend added that the man flatlined in the ambulance and stopped breathing but was resuscitated after receiving five shocks from an Automated External Defibrillator.

"He's since fully recovered but is still undergoing observation in hospital," said the friend.

'You shut down Zouk'

The man's friend visited him in the hospital and asked him in a video if he recalled anything from the incident.

"I remember Tin Box. I can't remember Zouk," the man said.

"You can't remember Zouk? You managed to shut down Zouk. Very few people can say that," teased the friend.

The man laughed in surprise.

"They turned on the lights for you...at three o'clock," the friend explained in the video.

The man's friend also added in the caption that medical test results showed that he did not have any blockage in his arteries.

The friend shared that the man's heart stopped due to an irregular rhythm, and he is expected to receive a defibrillator implant soon.

According to his friend, the man who had a heart attack is in his fifties and works in the fitness industry. He had previously suffered a heart attack 26 years ago, and that episode came with symptoms such as cold sweat, chest pain and numbness in the left arm.

The man decided to share his story because he found it "scary" that he had no symptoms before this latest incident.  

When told that it was unusual for those who have flatlined to be responsive so quickly, the man credited the immediate CPR he received for ensuring that oxygen continued to reach his brains and other vital organs, even when his heart had stopped beating.

"My friend is so grateful to the kind and brave stranger who performed CPR on him when he collapsed from a heart attack at Zouk on Friday, Sept 18 (technically, Saturday morning). 

"Without your timely intervention, his brain would have been deprived of oxygen and he likely wouldn't have made a full recovery (or might have died)!" 90s_clubber_singapore wrote in the caption.

The friend urged the good Samaritan to step forward so that the man could thank him for saving his life. 

In an updated caption, the friend shared that the person who saved his friend had gotten in touch and is part of Samaritans of Singapore.

"Coincidentally, the name I used on him is most fitting! He wasn't supposed to go to Zouk that night but changed his mind!," wrote the friend, adding that it was the stranger's second time performing CPR on someone.

In response to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the incident at 3C River Valley Road on Sept 19 at around 2.35am.

SCDF added that a person was taken to Singapore General Hospital.
