A 69-year-old man was found dead after neighbours noticed a foul odour emanating from his flat at Block 318 Ubi Avenue 1.

He was reportedly living alone at home after his son moved overseas to further his education in August.

The police said that they were alerted to the case of unnatural death on Thursday (Sept 17) at about 6.45pm. The man was found motionless and pronounced dead at the scene.

When Shin Min Daily News reporters arrived at the scene, they saw at least two police officers entering and leaving the flat.

The unit's door and windows were also open, with a strong smell of decay noticeable from the corridor. Suspected bloodstains could also be seen on the kitchen floor.

The Chinese daily interviewed a 69-year-old woman surnamed Su, who had made the police report with her son.

She had thought the smell was coming from her own home due to spoilt food, but got suspicious as the odour got stronger.

“My son and I tried to find the source of the odour and discovered it was coming from the man’s flat, so we called the police," she said.

Su shared that she has been living in her flat for about 40 years, and her deceased neighbour had only moved in about two years ago.

Describing the man as "friendly", she said that he had poor eyesight and used a cane for mobility.

As far as she knew, the man had four children, and had lived with his youngest son until the latter moved overseas.

He had only been living alone for a month when the tragedy happened, she added.

The police told AsiaOne that, based on preliminary investigations, they do not suspect foul play, but that further investigations are ongoing.
