A mobility scooter caught fire at the junction of Yishun Ring Road and Yishun Avenue 2 at about 1pm on Tuesday (Oct 6).

A video of the incident posted on social media shows flames coming out from beneath the seat of the mobility scooter, also known as a personal mobility aid (PMA).

Another video shows the mobility scooter moved to a grass patch beside the pedestrian crossing, with burnt marks seen left on the concrete pavement.

Police officers and firefighters are seen attending to the incident.

In response to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the fire was put out by members of the public using a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire had likely originated from the battery of the mobility scooter, SCDF said.

It reminded members of the public not to buy or use non-original batteries for their active mobility devices, including power-assisted bicycles (PAB), personal mobility device (PMD) and PMA.

They are also reminded not to charge the batteries of such devices overnight or for an extended period of time.
