Beloved Yusof Ishak Secondary School physics teacher dies at 55, parents and ex-students pay tribute online

A teacher leader at Yusof Ishak Secondary School (YISS) recently died at 55 years old, prompting an outpouring of online tributes from parents and former students.

A social media post by YISS on Aug 7 said Lau Chu Beng, a beloved Lead Teacher for Physics, had been with the school since 2009.

He "spent his career doing what he loved most", they said, which was teaching Physics and transforming the lives of others.

Lau also played an instrumental role in establishing the first Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence at YISS in September 2015.

"Known for his positive spirit and his willingness to go the extra mile, he touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and parents over the years," YISS added.

"You will not be forgotten."

A former student of Lau paid homage to him in a heartfelt letter submitted to Facebook page Death Kopitiam Singapore.

The writer, who identified himself only as Jonathan, said he and other students had gathered in school to celebrate Lau's birthday in July: "We knew you were ill and wanted you to get through this difficult time."

In the tribute, Jonathan said he walked away from his Physics lessons with more than just knowledge from the textbook: "You taught me not to fear failing or falling.

"You gave me the precious gift that all great teachers gave: the power to think for myself. And you reminded me that power would only be multiplied if I worked diligently over time."

Jonathan also wrote how Lau motivated his students, never giving up on any of them "regardless of how 'problematic' they were".

"Thank you, Mr Lau. I am who I am today because of you; your patience, concern, your love and unorthodox methods," he added.

Lau was one of the recipients of the Academy Awards for Professional Development 2025, where he was recognised in the Facilitator of Workshops category.

Comments left by parents and students under the Facebook post by YISS remembered Lau as a caring, friendly and encouraging teacher.

Bukit Panjang MP Liang Eng Hwa wrote that he was deeply saddened by the news, although he didn't say how he knows Lau.

"He has been such a decent and jolly person; always caring and dedicated to people around him," he said in the comment. "We will miss him dearly. Chu Beng, rest in peace."
