The police are looking for the driver of a white Toyota van after a hit-and-run accident in Sengkang on Wednesday (Sept 30) night.

A video of the incident shared with SG Road Vigilante and posted on its social media shows the van turning onto Compassvale Street from Punggol Road.

At this point, two pedestrians are waiting to cross the junction at the traffic island.

As the van makes the turn, it is seen understeering and heading for the two pedestrians, who manage to jump out of the van's way.

It ends up crashing into a cantilever traffic light, causing the mounted signal lights to fall.

Instead of stopping, the van is seen reversing to the middle of the junction, where it stops for several seconds, obstructing traffic.

It is then seen moving off again towards Anchorvale Street, with its front bumper dangling.

In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police said the incident happened at about 11.50pm, adding that the driver had left the scene before officers arrived.

"Efforts to trace the van driver are underway," the police said.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Under the Road Traffic Act, a traffic accident report must be lodged when the accident involves damage to government property.

Those who fail to take reasonable steps to inform the owner of damaged property about the damage can be fined up to $1,000 or jailed for up to three months for a first offence.
