For a second consecutive morning, residents in the Republic on Tuesday (Sept 22) woke up to moderate air quality in Singapore.

The central, eastern and western regions, which recorded unhealthy air quality on Sunday, returned to the moderate range the same day, and has stayed that way since.

At 9am, Singapore's 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) ranged from 61 to 81 — in the moderate range — with central Singapore recording the highest PSI reading of 81.

Meanwhile, one-hour PM2.5 concentration readings across all five regions are in the normal band.

PSI forecast

In its daily haze update on Monday evening, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said it expects the 24-hour PSI forecast to be in the moderate to low-unhealthy range.

It added that the risk of smoke haze affecting Singapore remains due to the prevailing south-easterly winds.

Moderate to dense smoke plumes were observed from fires in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra during its weather satellite's pass on Monday afternoon.

Data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre shows a sharp fall in the number of hotspots in Kalimantan on Monday, following rain in that region.

The number of hotspots in Kalimantan fell from 699 on Sept 20, to 201 on Sept 21.

Weather forecast

The Meteorological Service Singapore, in its 24-hour forecast, said thundery showers are expected over many areas in Singapore on Tuesday afternoon.

On Monday afternoon, moderate to heavy thundery showers fell over most areas in Singapore.

A heavy rain alert issued for the northern and western areas from 2.15pm to 3pm was later extended to the southern, western and central areas in a second alert issued from 2.50pm to 3.45pm.

In its fortnightly weather forecast issued on Sept 16, NEA had said localised short-duration thundery showers are expected between the late morning and afternoon over most parts of the island on most days.
