Taxi driver seen with 'bizarre' contraption strapped to seat: 'Ergonomic chairs are getting out of hand'

PUBLISHED ONSeptember 07, 2026 8:06 AMBYLim KeweiA taxi driver has raised brows online for his unconventional way of maintaining his seat position while behind the wheel.
In a photograph uploaded to Reddit on Sept 4, the cabby is seen resting his neck against several bundles strapped to the head restraint of his reclined driver's seat.
"Ergonomic chairs are getting out of hand," the befuddled netizen wrote. "Saw this bizarre setup in a (ComfortDelGro) taxi recently!"
The netizen, identified only as SS, told Lianhe Zaobao that he had boarded the taxi at KK Women and Children's Hospital and was bringing his unwell child home.
He said he had offhandedly snapped a photo of the cabby and the makeshift contraption as he found the situation unusual.
SS also claimed that the bundles appeared to contain packs of joss paper, which were fitted to the head restraint using a rope.
"He seemed to be enjoying himself which made it even stranger but then again, everyone has their own habits, so as long as he's comfortable," he was quoted by Zaobao as saying.
The Reddit post left some commenters similarly puzzled.
"He might just have some kind of spine or neck injury and had to rig something to allow him to continue working," a user suggested.
Another added: "I'm assuming that his chair must be broken that's why he can't adjust it. You don't need that amount of rubbers if only his chair is working (sic)."
Some also voiced safety concerns over the sight and pointed out that the taxi driver could be greatly hurt in an accident without the proper protection provided by the head restraint.
