Onam celebrated in S'pore

More than 1,200 members of the Malayalee Community and 180 rowers participated in Singapore's inaugural Snake Boat Race at Jurong Lake Park at the Chinese Garden on 5 September 2010.

Onam fever has hit the island with numerous harvest festival celebrations taking place across Singapore.

The Chong Pang Indian Activity Executive Committee (IAEC) held two events as part of its early Onam celebrations with a feast on July 15 and a concert on July 28.

The Singapore Malayalee Association had several events last month, starting with a concert on Aug 11 at the Esplanade Concert Hall called Onam Nite 2012 produced with Malayalam cable channel Asianet. The association also held the Onam Village on Aug 25 and 26 at the GIIS Queenstown campus, which featured cultural performances and a traditional Onam feast. The Joo Chiat IAEC too held celebrations at the Joo Chiat Community Centre, serving up a traditional vegetarian feast to a multiracial crowd.

This month has seen the Sree Narayana Mission hold its annual celebrations in Yishun while the Woodlands Community Club and the Chua Chu Kang Community Centre IAECs will hold their celebrations on Sept 9 at their respective community centres.

And six constituencies will be coming together for Onam Kampung@Jurong, holding the annual boat race on Sept 23.
