It therefore comes as no surprise that Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and its Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) share a close working relationship.
Still, the annual ritual of the two agencies presenting each other with cakes and pastries during their respective national day — on Aug 9 (Singapore) and Aug 31 (Malaysia) — remains a meaningful gesture.
Over at Tuas Checkpoint, AKPS presented ICA with a square cake, adorned with this year's National Day Parade logo and theme of "Go Beyond!".
At Woodlands Checkpoint, the cake thoughtfully featured the skylines of the two countries separated by a stretch of waterway.
In the middle of the waterway, a firm handshake was set against the sunrise.
Taking to its social media on National Day, ICA shared that its counterparts stationed at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex and Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex had presented customised cakes to its officers stationed at Tuas and Woodlands Checkpoints.
ICA thanked its Malaysian counterpart for their "thoughtful gestures", saying that these are a reflection of the close cooperation between the two agencies.
"We look forward to continuing our partnership and working closely together to keep our borders safe and secure," ICA added.
