Denise Wong has been appointed commissioner of the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC), the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) announced on Wednesday (April 1).

Wong, who is presently assistant chief executive (ACE) at IMDA's innovation and protection group, and concurrently PDPC's deputy commissioner, will continue to serve as ACE — where she oversees Singapore's data and artificial intelligence governance policies and ecosystem development.

In a joint media release by the authority and the commission, they said that Wong will lead the development and execution of PDPC's strategic direction in her new role.

The agencies added that apart from regulatory and enforcement decisions, she will also advise the Government on data protection matters and lead the commission to represent the Government internationally on matters relating to data protection.

"(In her previous role as deputy commissioner) she was instrumental in the formulation and implementation of policies that advance the responsible use of data.

"This includes the establishment of the Data Protection Trustmark as part of the national Singapore Standards, and the innovative use of regulatory sandboxes to support businesses to experiment with emerging technology such as privacy-enhancing technologies, while ensuring the protection of data," the agencies said.

The Singapore Standards are nationally recognised documents established by consensus. They set out specifications and procedures for the design, use or performance of materials, products, processes, services and systems.

Wong also supported close collaboration with data protection authorities around the world. These include enhancement of Asean partnerships with the European Commission and the Ibero-American Data Protection Network on the use of the Asean model contractual clauses to facilitate trusted data flows between Asean and the said regions.

PDPC was established in January 2013 to administer and enforce the Personal Data Protection Act.

Wong takes over the commissioner role from Ng Cher Pong, who is presently IMDA's chief executive officer.
