Man rejects $1.3 million for rare Pokemon card at Singapore Card Show, says will sell if given 'irresistible offer'
    December 16, 2025 6:54 AM

He owns a card purportedly worth over $1 million — equivalent to a piece of private property in Singapore — but he isn't about to sell it just yet.

At the recently concluded Singapore Card Show, held at the Singapore Expo over two days from Dec 13 to 14, one collectible in particular stole the limelight — a Japanese Pikachu Illustrator Promo card.

The card — owned by Singaporean card collector, Chew Zhan Lun, 33 — is considered one of the "holy grails" in the Pokemon card-collecting world due to its rarity.

Chew, who is the co-founder of card trading platform CTRL Collectibles, told media at the event that he had rejected a US$1 million (S$1.3 million) offer just last week by an individual to purchase the card.

    December 16, 2025 6:42 AM

HANOI — Vietnam is on track to receive a record high of 21 million foreign tourists this year, reflecting the country's strong recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, its culture ministry said, despite chronic air pollution and deadly flooding.

With a long coastline, natural landscapes and a rich history and culture, Vietnam has emerged as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia.

The country on Monday marked the arrival of the 20 millionth foreign tourist of the year, with a ceremony held on Phu Quoc Island, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said in a statement late on Monday.

The number of foreign arrivals this year will beat the previous record of 18 million set before the pandemic in 2019, and is up 19.3 per cent from last year, the ministry said.

European leaders agree Ukraine security guarantees should include European-led peacekeeping force
    December 16, 2025 6:37 AM

BERLIN — European leaders said they had agreed on Monday (Dec 15) any decisions on potential Ukrainian territorial concessions to Russia could only be made once robust security guarantees were in place which should include a European-led multinational force.

The statement issued by 10 European leaders as well as EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen came after they met in Berlin to back up peace talks between US and Ukrainian negotiators seeking to end the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two.

Outlining what they considered necessary security guarantees, the statement said Ukraine should be able to keep its armed forces at around 800,000 to be able to deter conflict.

In addition, Europe should coordinate a "multinational force Ukraine" made up from contributions from willing nations and supported by the United States.

Antisemitism allowed to fester in Australia, says daughter of wounded Holocaust survivor
    December 16, 2025 6:24 AM

SYDNEY — Government authorities have not done enough to stamp out hatred of Jews in Australia, which has allowed it to fester in the aftermath of Oct 7, said the daughter of a Holocaust survivor who was wounded at the Bondi shootings on Sunday (Dec 14).

Victoria Teplitsky, 53, a retired childcare centre owner, said that the father and son who allegedly went on a 10-minute shooting spree that killed 15 people had been "taught to hate," which was a bigger factor in the attack than access to guns.

"It's not the fact that those two people had a gun. It's the fact that hatred has been allowed to fester against the Jewish minority in Australia," she told Reuters in an interview.

"We are angry at our government because it comes from the top, and they should have stood up for our community with strength. And they should have squashed the hatred rather than kind of letting it slide," she said.

Independent probe under way at Law Society following allegations of workplace bullying
    December 16, 2025 6:15 AM

SINGAPORE — An online post in September 2025, which made allegations of workplace bullying at the Law Society of Singapore, has sparked an ongoing probe at the organisation.

The Straits Times understands the allegations come in the wake of a spate of resignations at the Law Society in 2025, with about a third of more than 70 full-time employees leaving their jobs.

A chief executive had quit less than four months into the job. Separately, the departure of a long-time senior executive spurred further resignations.

At one point in time, the human resources department was unstaffed.
