The 32-year-old singer-and-actress made a surprise appearance at her Camp Rock co-stars' show in New Jersey on Sunday (Aug 10) and not only was it "so nice" to be back on stage with the trio after receiving a call from ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas, they enjoyed some "meaningful" time in the dressing room with Demi's new husband Jordan 'Jutes' Lutes.

Speaking on the Chicks in the Office podcast, she said: "[Joe] was like, 'Hey, what are you doing next weekend on the 10th? We would love to have you come and perform This Is Me and Wouldn't Change a Thing. You've been a huge part of our journey and… this show is really important to us and we would love to have you there.

"And Taylor has this beautiful house. It's from the '30s, something you want to preserve and take care of."

Indonesia boosts role of military in food security initiative
    August 14, 2025 3:02 AM

JAKARTA — Indonesia has set up 100 army battalions to help with agriculture projects under President Prabowo Subianto's food security initiative, an official said on Wednesday (Aug 13), underscoring the growing role of the military in civilian life.

Since being inaugurated as president last year, Prabowo, a former special forces commander, has expanded the role of the military, including using soldiers to deliver his flagship free school meals project and to manufacture medicines for public use.

The battalions, consisting of thousands of soldiers, will be installed across Indonesia to work on agriculture and health projects, especially in remote areas, Brigadier General Wahyu Yudhayana, army spokesperson told Reuters.

"Our roles are as the enablers, to fill the gap when the projects are not delivered due to certain limitations or problems," Yudhayana said.

Uruguay's lower house of parliament votes in favour of euthanasia
    August 14, 2025 2:52 AM

MONTEVIDEO — Uruguay's lower house of parliament voted on Wednesday (Aug 13) to legalise euthanasia, emulating Cuba, Colombia and Ecuador in a societal shift around predominantly Catholic Latin America.

The bill to decriminalise assisted dying passed by 64 votes in the 99-seat Chamber of Representatives after an emotional overnight debate. It now moves to the senate, which is widely expected to approve legislation before year-end.

Under the new law, mentally competent adults suffering from terminal or incurable illnesses can request euthanasia.

One key amendment appeared to help win over Uruguayan lawmakers against the original 2022 proposal by requiring a medical board to review a case if the two doctors involved disagree.

Trump threatens 'severe consequences' if Putin blocks Ukraine peace
    August 14, 2025 2:41 AM

WASHINGTON/BERLIN — US President Donald Trump threatened "severe consequences" if Russia's Vladimir Putin does not agree to peace in Ukraine but also said on Wednesday (Aug 13) that a meeting between them could swiftly be followed by a second that would include the leader of Ukraine.

Trump did not specify what the consequences could be, but he has warned of economic sanctions if his meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday proves fruitless.

The comments by Trump and the outcome of a virtual conference with Trump, European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy held on Wednesday could provide encouragement for Kyiv after fears the Alaska summit could end up selling out Ukraine by carving up its territory.

However, Russia is likely to resist Ukraine and Europe's demands strongly and previously has said its stance had not changed since it was first detailed by Putin in June 2024.

Russia restricts Telegram and WhatsApp calls, citing law breaches
    August 14, 2025 2:31 AM

MOSCOW — Russia has started restricting some Telegram and WhatsApp calls, accusing the foreign-owned platforms of failing to share information with law enforcement in fraud and terrorism cases, the digital development ministry said on Wednesday (Aug 13).

Russia has clashed with foreign tech platforms for several years over content and data storage in a simmering dispute that intensified after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with critics saying that Russia is trying to expand its control over the country's internet space.

President Vladimir Putin has authorised the development of a state-backed messaging app integrated with government services, as Moscow seeks to establish what it calls digital sovereignty by promoting home-grown services and reducing its dependence on platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

"In order to counteract criminals... measures are being taken to partially restrict calls on these foreign messengers," the Interfax news agency quoted communications regulator Roskomnadzor as saying. "No other restrictions have been imposed on their functionality."
